Find out more about Michael and his role at Building Personnel below.

Why did you join Building Personnel?
Over the last four and half years I have run my own recruitment business. I decided it was a good time to start looking at joining a more collaborative working environment and came across Building Personnel. Meeting with the Director, Grant Bethune, he explained how Building Personnel operated and following our conversations there were a numerous things about this business that sparked my interest instantly. These included how they cover all areas of Building and Construction and have a number of experienced recruiters which creates a motivating and exciting place to work every day.

Can you give me a brief overview of what it is you do in your work?
As a Recruitment Consultant, my role is to join candidates and clients together to create a long-term and mutually beneficial connection.

From a client’s perspective my goal is to make sure I understand the brief, the business, the staff and the environment to make sure we provide the most suitable candidate for them and their business.

From the candidate’s side I understand that it is a stressful and confusing time when looking for a new opportunity. For me, communication is paramount when keeping a candidate informed and confident in their next stage in life.

What sector do you recruit across?
Engineering.

What type of clients do you work with?
This is a broad market covering Consultancy, Building Services, Surveying and Client-Side Project Management to name a few.

What roles are you currently recruiting for across the Engineering sector?
Engineering is an ever-evolving space, but predominately I cover the following, but not limited to:

  • Civil Engineers
  • Design Engineers
  • Project Managers
  • Traffic Engineer
  • Surveying (Land/Engineering)
  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineering

What advice can you give candidates to make sure they are getting the most out of a recruiter?
Honesty and communication is paramount. Making sure the recruiter has the most accurate understanding of the candidates current situation makes the whole process smooth and stress free.

Communication is essential to the process to ensure that all parties are informed. This makes the best impression to the recruiter and client.

What are three things employers really look for in a candidates CV?
I have always told candidates that an impressive CV is like a good book.  If you like the beginning you will continue reading.

My top three things that employers look for in a candidates CV are:

  1. Well-structured and condensed – Do your research and understand layouts of CV’s for your market. Make sure your CV isn’t 10 pages long. Keep it condensed and relevant.
  2. Longevity – Employers are looking for stable candidates to join their business so having longevity in previous positions always stands out!
  3. Key strengths and achievements – The best way to sell yourself to a new employer is by demonstrating your key skills and achievements. If these are relevant to the new employer, it will send you to the top of the pile
