Why did you join Building Personnel?
I was excited by the prospect of starting and growing my own desk in Civil Engineering in a highly-reputable business like Building Personnel. As a Recruitment Consultant this role will give me the opportunity to grow as a leader in a locally owned business that has a national reach and are well-known in the market.

Additionally I was looking for a role that allowed me to be able to maximise my time for work and life. I am one of the lucky people that is within a short walk to work which was important for me as I want to be able to spend time in my private life doing the things I enjoy and not getting stuck in Melbourne traffic.

Can you give me a brief overview of what it is you do in your work?
I network with, source candidates, track and monitor engineers, supervisors, project managers and many more roles across the Civil Engineering sector. I develop proactive working relationships with Clients with a reciprocal goal of getting them talent into the business whilst also keeping their overall costs down with a down to earth person.

What sector do you recruit across?
Civil Engineering.

What type of clients do you work with?
Any tier of the civil contractors’ space including rail, roads, bridges, water, subdivision, utilities, resources etc.

What roles are you currently recruiting for across the Civil Engineering sector?
Site Engineers, Project Managers, Estimators, Health Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ), Foreman (sub division and road), Project Engineers and plenty more.

What advice do you have for prospective candidates looking for roles within this sector?
If you are early in your career my advice is to aim for stability on your resume. Limit changing companies in your first five years as much as possible, ideally only working for one or two companies maximum.

  • Be patient when searching for a new role. Think of what is important for yourself for the long term – is it working closer to home? Being able to see family/friends. Having time to yourself or hobbies.
  • Never change roles purely just due to money, be very careful with counter offers (speak to current management before you meet/interview with anyone).
  • Move in silence when it comes to working with recruiters, limit how many you deal with to protect your own reputation and increase the chances of a change of role.

What are three interview tips you would give candidates to enhance their interview techniques?

  1. Know how to sell yourself (dress sharp or relevant to position), be aware of your strengths and be open to where you may need room for improvement
  2. Be yourself and give a true representation of yourself to the client
  3. Ask crucial and open-ended questions (development, projects, future, company growth, management style)
